Amin (50 years, Middle East)

When someone says to you, ‘Come to Me and I will give you rest’, it is very difficult to comply. Especially for someone who has not known a home for forty-five years and who has many questions and no answers, it is difficult to trust such a person. Especially since other times ended in disappointment.

‘My name is Amin. I am fifty years old. I came to personal faith in Jesus Christ five years ago, after I saw in others how their faith in Christ really was. Their lives were like a compass for me, showing me the way.

My parents died when I was still a child. I have never known the tenderness of a mother. Nor do I know what it is like to have a father. I grew up with my grandparents. They were very good to me. But they died when I was still young. I was one of the best students in school. But with their death, I lost all security. I decided to leave my native Syria in search of a new life. I took my questions with me.

I travelled the world looking for someone who could comfort me and who had answers to my many questions. I found no answers until, after a difficult journey from Malaysia, I arrived in Germany. During this journey there were points of light. I experienced how the light of Christ began to shine in my life through people who knew His love. In Germany, I heard Him very clearly through someone who said “Christ says to you and to all who are weary: “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”‘ So I said, “Tell me of Him. I need Someone who can comfort me.” When I attended my first church service, it was as if God was speaking to me personally. I heard how He made us in His image. It was a confirmation for me of God’s message to me. This was the moment that I could start following Him.

After my baptism, I attended a conference where a number of leading ministers spoke. Their preaching, based on the Bible, ignited my heart, because at that moment God answered my questions that I was walking with.

I decided to study the Bible. I studied book after book in search of the meaning of the text and to become more rooted in the Word. The more I learned, the more I realized that I knew very little. That is why I kept asking God for more teaching. And He has never shamed me. A friend told me about the possibility of learning more at a Bible school.

At Bible school, I receive solid Bible-based education. This is brought to me in a well-considered and coherent way. Because of this, more and more pieces of the puzzle in my life are falling into place. There is a solid curriculum and good teachers. They are very helpful. For me, it is as if I have got a new family. When I need them, they are there for me. I encourage everyone who wants to know more about the Bible and who has unanswered questions to enroll in Bible school.
